How JPI
started out

Starting as a horse dealer and trainer, John Parker sold his first horsebox to a customer in Malta in 1977. Someone who needed a horse taken to France heard about this and contacted John — and wife Jackie set off behind the wheel of the old Bedford. From this humble beginning, John Parker International Horse Transport was born.

Originally based in Liphook, Hampshire, Parkers outgrew their home and in 1995 moved to Pedlinge, improving transport links to and from Europe. Little Owl Barn became the hub of JPI with twenty-four stables. The success of the business led to the purchase of Little Droveway Stud in 2013 with twenty-six stables, indoor and outdoor arena and quarantine facilities.

Common questions

Here are our customers' most common queries — from paperwork and customs to what your horse can travel with.

When importing horses into the UK from within the EU, VAT and duty are handled as part of the standard customs declaration process. JPI manages all necessary customs documentation on your behalf. For exports from the UK, similar procedures apply. Our team will guide you through the specific requirements for your journey and destination country.
The documentation required depends on your route and the horse's purpose of travel. Typically we require: a valid equine passport, proof of ownership, relevant health certificates (issued by your vet), and a Power of Attorney form allowing JPI to act as your customs agent. We will advise you specifically once we know your route.
Yes — we operate regular scheduled departures to all major European destinations. Collection and delivery times are confirmed once your booking is arranged. For dedicated transport, timings are agreed directly with you. Please contact us to confirm the next available departure for your route.
Feed and water are carried on board throughout every journey. If your horse has specific dietary requirements, simply send your horse's feed with clear instructions and our team will adhere to your feeding programme. We ask clients to provide sufficient feed for the entire journey.
Yes — rugs, headcollars and similar equipment may travel with your horse. There are weight and space restrictions, so please discuss your requirements when booking. For larger quantities of equipment, additional arrangements may be necessary.
JPI will provide you with the Power of Attorney form. It must be completed and signed by the registered owner of the horse. This allows us to act as your agent for customs and border procedures. If you have any questions completing the form, our office team is happy to assist.
An EORI (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) number is required for any horse owner importing or exporting horses post-Brexit. You can apply online via the HMRC website — it's free and usually issued within three working days. JPI can advise on whether you need one for your specific journey.
Your horse will need: a valid equine passport (microchip must match), up-to-date vaccinations as required by the destination country, an export health certificate issued by an Official Veterinarian, and relevant customs documentation. Requirements vary by destination — contact us with your route and we will provide a full checklist.
